Enhance household livelihood & nutrition security through sustainable integrated farming approach for healthy living.

On Going Programe

Enabling, Empowering and Enhancing Access to Entitlements, Sustainable Livelihood :

The project contributes to the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices and off-farm livelihoods- supported by the CWS, Sincundrabad.

We are implementing  agricultural  nature scientific method  to make healthy profitable agro-products and engaging the farmers in their own process of making effective production. There is also awareness and skill building program for the farmers at the villages around the one blocks of Giridih Dstricts. This project is being sponsored by CWS Secundrabad.

Sustainable Livelihood Through Water harvesting and Soil conservation program:

(Mada/Non-Mada prototype Project): This program is undertaken in the 6 villages under Dewri Blocks of Giridih district, to ensure better agriculture production. Supported by Welfare Dept. Govt of Jharkhand through district-Giridih

Project Title

Enabling, Empowering and Enhancing Access to Entitlements, Sustainable Livelihood and Participatory Governance among the Marginalised Communities in the 8 village of Bagodar block under Giridih District  of Jharkhand. 

Program objective

  • The project contributes to the protection of human rights and empowerment of marginalised people (women, dalits, adivasis and minorities).
  • The project contributes to the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices and off-farm livelihoods. (applicable for Jharkhand)
  • The project contributes to increased participation of the Elected Representatives, Functional Committees and marginalised communities in their own governance and development.

Program indicators

  • 5,000 farmers have adopted sustainable agricultural practices
  • 4,000 (i.e. 75% of 20,000) farmers have increased their annual average income from Rs 24,000 to Rs 36,000 (average increase of 50%)
  • 500 families are benefited through the adoption of non-farm activities.

Implented activities

  • BVA put forward the Pathways through which household agricultural activity have influences on child nutrition. 260 farmers were trained and made aware on the Issue of food and nutrition security, SIFS, Nutrition Gardening and production of bio compost and pesticides. The tracking of 200 households on the issue of Diet Diversity. 50% of children have reached to Normal grade from malnutrition from 150 numbers of families.
  • BVA facilitated its support to the Community was to aware about SIFS technology, nutrition security, and convergence approach and financial inclusion. Targeted population and project participants were trained on project interventions.
  • Project participants Increased the Consumption by household members of the produce agriculture produces. 85% of integrated farmers, out of 900, were to adopted at list 3-5 sub systems of   the food diversity in their food habits
  • AT the Project intervention area 14 numbers of Farmer adopted SRI method the hand holding support from BVA provided to the farmers. The main components were FARMERS GROUP meeting, Technology presentation, process management. In put support also provided to them. The farmers introduced SRI method 1st time and the results are good for crop paddy. Direct beneficiaries farmers action promoted a replication process to other farmers community.
  • In addition to it Jamuniya village there are 7women farmer are adopted the method i.e piyasi devi ,Fuliya devi Uama devi, Gunjri devi etc in crop approximately 5 ecr  of land . This was also facilitated a value addition for the women for Livelihood promotion
  • Major thrust was SRI method role out, technical support on it. organic fertilizer preparation got larger attention during farmers meeting .MISHRIT KHETI,VERMI COMPOSIT,LEYER FARMING activity started up. AZOLA Compos concept put forward .10 farmers made a barming compost. 50 farmer  made organic fertilizer  kitnashak
  • Eight farmer also adopt Mishrit Kheti, and layer farming During PLA exercise BVA facilitator Encouraged trainees to think of themselves as facilitators of other people’s learning, particularly when they get to the village neighbourhood.
  • Brainstorm on participation. Discuss positive issues and ways to improve the approach shown. Participants were involved and Pro-active efforts made by them a, i.e. targeting those parts of the community that rarely participate in more conventional consultations.
  • Mapping of the services were done and priority were set for SIFS, Nutritional security, sanitation and GIRL Child enrolment at AWCS.. Participation during VHSND.The women headed farmers explained the SIFS methods and promotion nutritional garden, duckerey ,Diet diversity experience to other members.
  • A major break through with the project interventions focused on women in the agriculture sector, particularly Nutrition  gardens, small animal promotion, and women’s employment generation. In The project intervention are 45 of NUTRITION GARDEN WERE ESTABLISHED.
  • PD hearth session increased nutrition seeking behaviors for the 38% of participants   attended   and taken services from AWCs/AWW/ANM  for the Growth monitoring and  health services
  • The BVA had facilitated Community Score Card exercises with a objective to brought together Farmers, women, Aganwadi worker and Shiya and local government to identify service utilization and reduction of Challenge to mutually create respond ; and to work in on-going partnership to implement and track the effectiveness of solutions identified.
  • Area of Points were focused on preliminary work and planning including identification and support, coordination, convergence and input support On going training with community, for the development of Nutrional  garden, SIFS, sanitation, hygiene, and AWC services   The accountability of service provider and service receiver decided by participants.
  • As part of supportive supervision Interaction with 15 ANM/Sahiya/ICDS Workers were undertaken by the BVA team. The main core area of focus were promotion of nutrition garden, PD hearth sessions gap reduction and PLA observation. The Health, Nutrition security, Livelihood, accesses to services points were detailed. Roles, task and responsibility were explained by participants. More coordination efforts needed and participants made decision that during VHSND Mother/women group meeting to be held on services. POSAN sakhi to be involved for more house hold level visit and Saiya will focus on left out and drop out population to ensure health services and health supply such as IFA-Medendazole, family planning items. In the group meeting COMPLEMENTERY feeding practices to be addressed and all women will be advised Nutrition garden at their house hold level.
  • Direct beneficiaries were linked with Bank account and Kishan Credit Card after the financial inclusion training program and Project follow ups.

47  numbers of Children were enrolled to AWCS for ICDS services and Malnutrition reduction.

  • 15 farmers were linked with ,MGNREGA , 110 with food security and 54  with social security have improved their living slandered as their income had grown up by 20 %.

Out –come

  • A against our target of 900 farmers to be brought under this programme, we have linked 800 farmers with this progrmme. And they have adopted more than 4 sub systems of the food diversity in their daily life.
  • 3 farmers built the model of  SIFS and 28 others farmers developed kitchen garden.
  • More them 110 farmers have been made aware and they have adopted to subsystems of SIFS.
  • More than 150 farmers were enthusiastically became ready to install nutrition garden, after their orientation.
  • About 30 % of farmers adopted the SIFS and this has helped them cut their expenditure, quality of the farming was improved and production was hiked thus farmers earned more.

Any Social, Political Change

  • Women had started a campaign on liquor ban in the project area and they are gaining success too.
  • Awareness among the people has been improved against blind faith and certain social evil.
  • Initially, women were not willing to take part in the training session as well as in meeting but now things have been changing.
  • Earlier, some reputed people were the decision maker for the development of their village but now backward class, tribal people especially women play important role in it.
  • Role of the community is improving on the proper functioning and running of the ongoing government services and projects.
  • With the intervention of the community there has been lot of improvement in the quality of government services and projects.
  • Now community people is understanding their responsibility to take care of the government built infrastructural structure such as school building, ICDS centre, toilet, etc. A recent example has been found on Lukiya village where community people had stepped up for the repairing of the damaged toilet in the ICDS centre.
  • Every Sunday, meetings were arranged in the Addwara panchayat on which all the villagers discuss on how to solve all the minor and major problems of the villages. They also try to end their personal issues and rivalries as well as they do planning on what to do for the development of agriculture on these meeting.
  • Peace has been established at the society level among all class. No incident of religious dispute in school, public places as well as on social issues has been found.
  • Views of the community people are changing in matters of girls. Discrimination is reduced and now numbers of guardian willing to send their daughter to school is rising.

Every village of Addwara panchayat is situated on the innermost secton of forest. At one time management of the natual resources of this panchayat, planning of the development, future of the people, education and health lies on hands of the outer leader of any hard core organization. But now situation have changed as people of the villages are deciding their destiny. In every village people themself form a organization whose purpose is development of the village by the mutual understanding in a democratic manner to built a better future. Community members are from different political parties and have different opinion but they stand united in the matters of development of their villages. Everyone participated on the election based on the panchayati raj system. For the betterment of gram sabha, village committee commonly known as forest protection committee, village protection committee  are playing an important role.Because of the political awareness and public advocay this year electricity has been provided to the villages.After construction planning program 20 small pond have been constructed in this panchayat which is far more than any other panchayat. Along with this fencing work of panchayat secretariat has also been done.1 unit shop were sanctioned of public distribution system.

Past accomplishment:

Jharkhand Watershed Development Program:-

The CWS supported project has specific focus on promoting sustainable agriculture activities and micro watershed concept in 8 villages of Bagodar block in Giridih district.

Formation of Gram Sabha, formation of youth clubs, formation of SHGs for conservation of water, plantation and other related work for excluded groups only. Out come of gram sabha is that they already accumulate a handsome amount as it has been decided that all the construction a 25% amount must be contributed to gram sabha in village development fund for 6 years.

Campaign against women :

Campaign Against Domestic Violence ( JUMAV and WECAN) OXFAM supported Under network program.

Empowering of women through pressure group formation. Number of women trafficking and atrocities minimized in this area. Domestic violence minimal in these area through networking strategy for last 10 years.

GRAMIN VIKAS ANDOLAN ( CAPART)

Information, skill development and advocacy to villagers for the development of villages. Organization of JANTA DARBAR to address people grievances and also advice and counseling for their rights and entitlements. Above all it is already taken a shape of movement JATTHA for last 2 years.

The training was provided to the members of Gram-Panchayats, Panchayat Samiti and other represents of Local PRIs. The training module was followed with contents of different laws and rules, provisions and entitlements pertaining within the purview of PRIs.

PRAKALP : 

The District Water and Sanitation Mission supported project aims to develop mass awareness and hygienic practices in local community of Bagodar on water sanitation.

Social mobilization:

Formation of female SHG, User’s Group, Watershed Committee, Village Education Committee and Health Committee etc.

  Capacity Building facilities Training Facilities:

Banwasi has residential training arrangements with adequate arrangement for 100 learners at Bagodar and 50 learners at Giridih .

It has LCD projector, Photocopier, Digital movie camera and sufficient training modules on PRI.

 

Qualified Master Trainers are available on the issues of local self governance, micro planning and Panchayat Raj and Yoga.

Exposure sites

Exposure to elected PRIs with good background can be arranged in the nearby districts of Munger, Jamui and Nawada of Bihar.

Demonstration Areas

8 Class rooms and 3 halls for seminar/ plenary are available in the BVA training centres.

Good practices in gram sabha functioning can be demonstrated in field at the JWDP project area (5 villages) in Bagodar block where Banwasi has helped community to develop social regulations and democratic decision making systems.

Hostel

BVA has adequate lodging and fooding arrangements through its regular hostel for 100 residents at Bagodar and 50 residents at Giridih.

In the year 2011-2012 BVA had successfully conducted training of elected representatives and officials of Panchayat Samiti and Gram Panchayat of all blocks of Giridih District of Jharkhand within the stipulated time period and guidelines and hence documents along with photographs had been sent to the department. As a result 249 Panchayat Samiti and 3542 Gram Panchayat members had been trained including officials of the same.

The organization has mainstreamed primitive tribes like Birhore and other excluded groups into social-political mainstream. It has motivated 12 Birhore candidates to participate in Panchayat elections that is historical in their life history.

Capacity building programme of Birhor (PTGs) 2009 to Cont Bagodar Block under Giridih District Developed  self confidence in Birhor community   *Now Birhor  family moved towards  better sustainable livelihood & development like Agriculture, Animal Husbandry etc.,

First time they moved for govt.hospitals for treatment as well as in  delivery cases.

Death rate of     child became down.

Various kinds of superstitions earlier   beliefs in birhor’s  became lower.

Now Birhors started to mixing  themselves with society and taking active participation in Panchayat election

    Capacity building Training Programme of ANMs &LHV under Vitamin A Supplementation 2008 to Cont…. Giridih, Kodrma, Jamtara & Dhanbad District District level TOT organised in Giridih in which 47 block officials including M.O.,IC,CDPO,LS and HW had actively  participated.

Block level training organised in two district i.e.,Giridih and Kodarma in March’08 in which total 2372 and 699 participants (ANM,LHV,HW) participated.

Capacity Building of Community Based Institutions in Primary Education

With help of BEP, SPEED and SSA; Banwasi Vikas Ashram has promoted more than  VEC in 350 villages of 6 districts in Bihar and Jharkhand.

The training and follow up micro planning activities helped local schools and educational planning process with need based inputs, demands and plan. It also helped education department in effective budgeting and resource utilization.

Capacity Building on Quality Education

Training of teachers, special educators has helped them to improve class room activities. The performance of children and educational environment has significantly  improved in residential/ non residential bridge courses of SSA in 11 districts of Jharkhand and identified Govt. schools with support from UNICEF.

Training on Natural Resource Management

Helped local community in 5 villages of Bagodar to develop social regulations and community based natural resource management. The capacity building plan helped them to develop drought free villages.

Capacity Building on Water and Sanitation

Field training of motivators and CBOs has increased demand from the locality and inculcated health seeking behaviour within the community.

Skill Development and entrepreneurship training

With help of DRDA 60 women have developed their skills and entrepreneurship. Subsequently they have been encouraged to start up income generation activities with bank linkages.

Training of health workers on Vitamin A Supplementation

With regular support and monitoring the Vitamin A supplementation during the Routine Immunization sessions has significantly improved.

Local Self Governance

5 Gram sabhas strengthened as model villages to facilitate development process based on community based micro planning, natural resource management and social regulations.

Right based education

Under Gramin Vikas Andolan of CAPART, Banwasi has developed skilled and knowledge equipped youth volunteers to facilitate learning through Vikas Sathi Group on Governance, entitlement and natural resource management.
