OVERVIEW
Banwasi Vikas Ashram established in the year 1990 under society regd. Act 1960. It is a grass-root voluntary organization working in Koderma, Hazaribagh, Chatra,Godda and Giridih districts of Jharkhand to improve the Education, Health, Family Planning. Adolescent girls health, RTI-STI, Right to food, and WASH and livelihood of vulnerable sections of the society, through their organization, skill building, SHG promotion ,bank linkages, IGA ,youth group capacity building, assistance and supportive supervision to system and community.
Banwasi Vikas Ashram also provide technical assistance for Participatory Learning action approach is to develop self help approach among the underprivileged community in a lifecycle approach, starting with their immediate concerns and developing the inbuilt system to empower local community for taking up development initiatives by themselves. BVA facilitate for the reduction of socially exclusion, malnutrition and anemia in the operation area with close coordination with SHGs, Youth Club, villagers, and system.
Guiding principle :
Banwasi approach is to develop self help approach among the disadvantaged community in a lifecycle approach, starting with their immediate concerns and developing the inbuilt system to empower local community for taking up development initiatives by themselves.

Child Rights and Child Protection Related Programme
CHILDLINE India Foundation:
Child protection through partnership with CHILD line foundation, community & government of India & Jharkhand: – Banwasi Vikas Ahram(BVA) is a sub center in 3 blocks(Bagodar,Dumri and Saria) of Gridih district in association with CHILDLINE India Foundation of India for the safety of child right/child protection or other related issues. There are many cases has been resolved on making this intervention around the areas. The Children’s right has been raised and being saved their rights with active support of concerned government authorities. Dial–1098 to save or help a child from the sickness, loneliness, providing shelter, being beaten brutally on the way, child labor without any reward and any children without address or guardian found around. Anybody can call on 1098; their privacy will be kept secret.
SRHR Issues and Improving access to safe abortion :
It is IPaS supported programme, BVA is working on issues of women health and improving access of safe-abortion among female adolescents of the age group of 15 to 24 in all 22 GPs of Bagodar block. The programme has been implementing with aiming at abolish the rural myth on abortion and aware youth section of people to have understanding about the safe-abortion and the legal acts related to the subject matter as per Indian constitutions.
Enabling, Empowering and Enhancing Access to Entitlements, Sustainable Livelihood:
The project contributes to the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices and off-farm livelihoods- supported by the CWS, Sincundrabad.
We are implementing agricultural nature scientific method to make healthy profitable agro-products and engaging the farmers in their own process of making effective production. There is also awareness and skill building program for the farmers at the villages around the one block of Giridih Dstricts. This project is being sponsored by CWS Secundrabad.
Sustainable Livelihood through Water harvesting and Soil conservation program:
(Mada/Non-Mada prototype Project): This program is undertaken in the 6 villages under Dewri Blocks of Giridih district, to ensure better agriculture production. Supported by Welfare Dept. Govt of Jharkhand through district-Giridih

Banwasi Vikas Ashram had been a partner with UNICEF, Patna Office to execute two years residential bridge camp programme for disadvantaged adolescents’ girls who were completely deprived of primary education. The programme was run for two consecutive academic years from 2002 to till 2004.
In the year of 2006-07 another programme was run in the 11 district of Jharkhand to develop quality education package for non-residential bridge course run under SSA and develop Master trainers at the district level for capacity building of teacher through training.
UNICEF –Govt–Banwasi Vikas Ashram has been instrumental in developing contents for SSA non residential bridge camps in Jharkhand that includes ‘Prayas,’ the Primer for condensed course and ‘Abhyas,’ the exercise- book with worksheets for self-learning and self- assessment by the children and a training Manual for trainers which were accepted warmly in their original forms by the teachers, education workers and the SSA authorities. Recently the Organization has also introduced RUBRIC and other Continuous Assessment tools for the non-residential bridge course system of SSA through Quality Education Package.
Educational Activities: Banwasi has long term involvement in primary education programme right from inception of our organization i.e., approximately two decade ago. The organization has successfully managed educational programmes in the field of service delivery, community mobilization, capacity building and content development. So far it has made direct interventions with more than 6000 children for their meaningful education and mainstreaming to formal education.
A UN- GOI intervention for primary schooling Janshala Programme
Under the UN and Govt. of India programme ‘Janshala,’ BVA has significantly contributed to community mobilization, capacity building of teachers with joyful learning methods, pedagogy, evaluation methods and girl-schooling. In this programme, BVA has jointly worked with the state education mechanism and involved itself with micro-planning process in 300 village panchayats in 03 districts of Bihar and 01 district of Jharkhand.
BVA facilitated the capacity building exercise and also the development of a 20-day micro-planning module, which has now been adopted by Jharkhand Education Project Council, Ranchi in the same form for its interventions in other areas.
SPEED (Bihar)
Banwasi Vikas Ashram has been associated with SPEED since its inception and has significantly contributed to the training of VECs & animators in 8 districts of the-then undivided Bihar.
Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (Jharkhand Education Project Council)
Banwasi Vikas Ashram has established and managed 100 EGS centers in 100 villages in Bagodar block of Giridih district during the year 2003-04 and handed over then to SSA authority for their continuation. Presently, BVA has been actively involved in content development for SSA non-residential bridge camps and the capacity building of their educators in 11 districts of Jharkhand.
Bihar Education Project-BVA was actively involved with the BEP Project, and conducted
micro planning for education in 150 villages of 3 community development blocks of Chatra
district.
UNESCO
To disseminate good practices in girls’ schooling, BVA has demonstrated the application of Pleasurable Learning & Teaching methods. BVA, in this connection, provided Resource Persons to develop Master Trainers from and among the school teachers at the national workshop conducted by UNESCO at Ferozabad (U.P).

REACH INDIA Programme (USAID)
Residential bridge camp supported initially by UNICEF and subsequently by REACH INDIA has emerged as a local resource centre in this region for schooling of adolescent girls at-risk and capacity building of education institutions in pleasurable learning and teaching methods, individual student tracking, content development and educational management..
IGSSS/ National Education Group
With the support of National Education Group and IGSSS, BVA has run 30 non-formal education centers in Katkamsandi block of Hazaribagh district.
Lok-Pahal program (an initiative to qualitative aspects in local education system) supported by JRD Tata Trust
Banwasi Vikas Ashram started ‘LOK – PAHAL’ program in the year 08-09 and subsequently run the program till 2012-2013 for qualitative change in 120 elementry schools in the block –Bagodar of district, Giridih. This program is supported by JRDT trust. This program includes residential bridge course center for 100 at-risk adolescent girls. BVA is providing technical assistance training of teachers, micro-planning for primary education and curriculum / content development. It has developed a variety of teaching and learning materials, practices and activities which adds to the pleasurable learning and teaching methods. The organization has inbuilt system of computerized accounting for its programmes, effective MIS and individual child tracking system in place.
Education to Adolescent girls at risk level:
More than 1200 at risk adolescent girls belong to excluded groups completed their primary education and 90% of them mainstreamed for higher education. They also received life-skills training and also learnt lesson to free their mind from social dogmas and customs and also untouchebility problem. This program is supported by UNICEF, REACH India, SSA and now JRDT Trust for last 12 years.
Jharkhand Watershed Development Program:-
The CWS supported project has specific focus on promoting sustainable agriculture activities and micro watershed concept in 8 villages of Bagodar block in Giridih district.
Formation of Gram Sabha, formation of youth clubs, formation of SHGs for conservation of water, plantation and other related work for excluded groups only. Outcome of gram Sabha is that they already accumulate a handsome amount as it has been decided that all the construction a 25% amount must be contributed to gram Sabha in village development fund for 6 years.
Campaign against Women:
Campaign against Domestic Violence (JUMAV and WECAN) OXFAM supported Under network program.
Empowering of women through pressure group formation. Number of women trafficking and atrocities minimized in this area. Domestic violence minimal in these area through networking strategy for last 10 years.
GRAMIN VIKAS ANDOLAN ( CAPART)
Information, skill development and advocacy to villagers for the development of villages. Organization of JANTA DARBAR to address people grievances and also advice and counseling for their rights and entitlements. Above all it is already taken a shape of movement JATTHA for last 2 years.
Capacity Building & Training:
Capacity Building Training of PRIs:
The capacity building training program of PRIs members was held in the Giridih district of Jharkhand. A total 13 blocks was covered under this program. The training was provided to the members of Gram-Panchayats, Panchayat Samiti and other represents of Local PRIs. The training module was followed with contents of different laws and rules, provisions and entitlements pertaining within the purview of PRIs.
Capacity Building of Community Based Institutions in Primary Education
With help of BEP, SPEED and SSA; Banwasi Vikas Ashram has promoted more than VEC in 350 villages of 6 districts in Bihar and Jharkhand.
The training and follow up micro planning activities helped local schools and educational planning process with need based inputs, demands and plan. It also helped education department in effective budgeting and resource utilization.
Capacity Building on Quality Education
Training of teachers, special educators has helped them to improve class room activities. The performance of children and educational environment has significantly improved in residential/ non residential bridge courses of SSA in 11 districts of Jharkhand and identified Govt. schools with support from UNICEF.
Training on Natural Resource Management
Helped local community in 5 villages of Bagodar to develop social regulations and community based natural resource management. The capacity building plan helped them to develop drought free villages.
Capacity Building on Water and Sanitation
Field training of motivators and CBOs has increased demand from the locality and inculcated health seeking behaviour within the community.
Skill Development and entrepreneurship training
With help of DRDA 60 women have developed their skills and entrepreneurship. Subsequently they have been encouraged to start up income generation activities with bank linkages.
Training of health workers on Vitamin A Supplementation
With regular support and monitoring the Vitamin A supplementation during the Routine Immunization sessions has significantly improved.
Local Self Governance
5 Gram sabhas strengthened as model villages to facilitate development process based on community based micro planning, natural resource management and social regulations.
Right based education
Under Gramin Vikas Andolan of CAPART, Banwasi has developed skilled and knowledge equipped youth volunteers to facilitate learning through Vikas Sathi Group on Governance, entitlement and natural resource management.

Technical Assistance, research and training :
BVA is providing technical assistance by a team of committed and well experienced professionals to ‘LOK – PAHAL’ team of workers and volunteers with proven track record in quality education delivery/ strengthen GOI program Swacha Bharat avhiyan to creation of awareness for IHHL total 150 villages and processing the ODF with close collaboration with PRI and community and nodal departments –Participatory Learning action at primary levels that includes different aspects like Self help group empowerment gender equality and diversity, violence against women(VAW), Even the Front line worker (FLW) put up the cases to the WOMEN Help line and to promote health seeking behaviors ,example VIT-A supplementation-VHND,JSY, family planning and adolescent girls health program.
Program support and assistance has been made to advisor Jharkhand of H’ble Supreme Court of India Right to Food Campaign around area of Jharkhand.

Mr. Suresh Kumar “Shakti”, ‘Secretary to the organization’ a legend of Social Sector activist, He is having full of life experience after doing graduation in Social Sector. He has a deep sense of renovation in social living and acting on different social issues among the community irrespective of cast, creed, religions & gender.
Mr. Suresh Kumar Shakti, the team leader and founder of Banwasi, has long association with primary education activities in Jharkhand and Bihar. He has been involved in educational programmes/Health/Women empowerment /Skill building/ Livelihood/ WASH
Mr. Suresh Kumar Shakti, is a member Dist education committee/DRDA/Dist Health/NITI Aayog sub-committee. Mr. Shakti is promoter of Result Base Management .Mr. Shakti has a successful track record of 25 years in managing Health/Women empowerment /Skill building/ Livelihood/ WASH. His approach towards Government system /INGOS/Trusts/NGOS is a word of praise and commands respects for his excellent coordination and collaboration with Stack holder.
Dr. Bipin Kumar Singh, ‘CEO to the program’ for BVA having more than 10 years of work experience with specialization in management, implementation, governance, communication, women and child rights, health and advocacy, with strong leadership, advocacy and research & analysis quality along with understanding the value of team work and a strong interpersonal communications and project management skills. Area of Expertise: Health, Gender, Nutrition, sanitation for Adolescent, Youth, Child & livelihood & Agriculture./Education: Doctorate in Rural Development Management from IRDM, MU Boadh Gaya & MBA in HR & Finance from NEC_PTU Jalandhar India. Smt. Kumkum Jha, ‘Gender Sensitization Specialist’ a self-motivated development professional with a Master in Social Work. Having more than 9 years of work experience in different sector with different organisation, she is with well expertise in Community, Monitoring and Evaluation, Project Management and Impact assessment, rehabilitation, skill development, research and assessment for impact of women and child trafficking Women Helpline, school dropout prevention pilot program, etc. . Smt. Kumkum Jha given her technical Assistance to Government Organisation/CBOs/ SHGs in adopting Quality based impact improvement on Various Social development issues i.e., Women, Adolescent, Child Health & Nutritional/Education/Social Rights/Government Plan/Gender sensitivity/Behaviour Change & communication for under privileged community either at Facilities and at Outreach.
Mr Kushal Mukherjee- Senior Program Advisor– Mr Kushal Mukherjee is having the experience 26 years, with Care-Inc/Care-India/Usaid/Bihar technical assistance Support Team (BTAST) supported by Ukaid-DFID. Oversee the projects related to National Health Mission (NHM), Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) Scheme, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Public Health Engineering Department (PHED),WDC, Education. Expertise in Program management and advocacy with Govt/INGOS/NGOs/Lead and facilitate work planning, take accountability for the delivery of agreed results. Keen understanding of Sustainability strategies and having experience program mainstreaming. A fellow of PGDBM from Institute of Management Technology (IMT); He is very sound and proficient development ideas with his successful advocacy towards the government and communities’ simultaneously.
Subodh Kumar – Program coordinator– Mr Subodh is having the experience 7 years, with Governement INGOs and NGO in India for his technical assistance and supported effectively. Oversee the projects related to National Health Mission (NHM), Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) Scheme.
